The UKMT challenges

The UK Mathematics Trust runs the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Maths Challenges, which students sit at school. They’re multiple-choice papers that reward clear thinking more than memorised methods.

Top scorers are invited to follow-on rounds: the Kangaroo papers and, for the very highest scorers, the Olympiads, where solutions are written out in full.

How lessons work

Challenge questions are puzzles more than exercises, so lessons work through past papers and build the problem-solving habits behind them: drawing a diagram, trying small cases, working backwards, spotting patterns and symmetry, and ruling out impossible answers. For the Olympiad rounds, lessons also cover how to write a clear, complete solution.

UKMT tutoring: common questions

How much do UKMT lessons cost?

The price is £30 per lesson, and each lesson is 60 minutes, one-to-one and online. Introductory price for new students — rising to £35 soon. Every new student starts with a free phone call to talk through what they need.

Is this only for students who are already top of the class?

No. Any student who enjoys maths can get better at problem solving, and the skills help in school exams too, especially on the harder questions at the end of a paper.

When are the challenges?

Each challenge runs once a year, and schools enter their own students. Ask your child’s school which challenges they take part in, and when.

Can lessons mix UKMT practice with school maths?

Yes. Lessons can cover school topics most weeks, with challenge practice in the run-up to a paper.

Are lessons online?

Yes. Lessons take place on a video call, so you can be anywhere in the UK. Your child needs a laptop or tablet and a reliable internet connection.
